Is your pool green? That’s far from ideal! Green pool water is caused by algae growth, a common problem for pool owners that can significantly reduce swimming enjoyment. But did you know that pool slats can help limit algae formation? In this article, you will discover how algae develop and the benefits of algae-masking slats.

Green Pool Water
Algae formation is a natural process caused by a combination of sunlight, stagnant water, and organic nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates. Algae spores continuously enter the pool through wind, rain, or even contaminated swimwear and cleaning tools. When the conditions are optimal—such as an imbalanced water chemistry, poor water treatment, warm temperatures, and sufficient sunlight—an algae bloom can occur within hours. Through photosynthesis, they grow and multiply at a rapid rate.
Don't Be Deceived!
Although the term "anti-algae" is frequently used in the world of covers, it is important to understand that no slat can fully prevent algae from entering the pool water. Therefore, this claim can be misleading. What is possible, however, is drastically reducing the conditions that algae need to grow. That is exactly what the algae-masking feature of the Solar Eclipse® slats does. Read on below to find out how!
Invest in algae-masking technology
The Solar Eclipse® and PC66 slats are specially designed with an algae-masking chamber that blocks sunlight at the hinge. All chambers of these slats are completely sealed from sunlight thanks to an opaque black underlayer. This means that algae do not have access to the light source they need to grow. Additionally, the black underlayer of the slats extends all the way to the connecting hinge. This prevents light from entering the hook, thus preventing algae growth in this vulnerable area. This innovative design not only limits algae formation but also makes any biological growth less visible – keeping the slats aesthetically pleasing.
Roldeck® Cleaner
Although algae-masking slats like the Solar Eclipse® do a lot to prevent algae growth, regular maintenance remains essential. Additionally, ensure proper water treatment, optimal water circulation, and a well-functioning filtration system to keep the water quality healthy. At Roldeck®, we also recommend thoroughly cleaning your slats two to three times a year. Curious about how to do this? Read more here.
Are you dealing with green algae on and between your slats? With the Roldeck® Cleaner, you can easily remove them. Apply the special cleaner using a sprayer to the green spots. The algae are broken down in the water so they can be efficiently absorbed by the filtration system. The result? Clear, clean, and inviting swimming water.
